This was such a lovely and relaxing experience! My husband and I enjoyed the 2 person salt and sound. We were given blankets and warm salt stones, then we placed on headphones and were able to also feel the vibrations in the chairs. The entire experience left us feeling so rejuvenated! The only complaint I have is how fast 45 minutes passed!

So very glad this place exists. My first visit provided me the space to learn how to meditate, and in so doing proved to be the spark that set off a virtuous cycle of rejuvenation in my life. I highly recommend for anyone who has tried meditation before but felt like they never really "got it." Durham Salt Cave has cultivated a space that allows you to explore stillness. It's become a go-to for when friends and family visit. Perfect for a group of 3-6 people.

The Experience

True Halotherapy (Dry Salt Therapy)
“Halo” means “salt” in Greek and Halotherapy has been practiced for over 150 years as people have discovered its excellent ability to treat respiratory and other issues. Salt is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. Research supports halotherapy as an alternative treatment for a wide variety of ailments.
Our high-quality Halogenerator system disperses dry salt particles as small as 5 microns which can reach the lungs, sinuses, ear canals, and pores of your skin. Here, the tiny salt particles help your body heal by aiding in removing bacteria, viruses, mold spores, pollen, and pollutants.

Acoustic Resonance Therapy (ART, a.k.a Sound Bath)
Everything has a frequency at which it vibrates, including every part of the body. During your Salt Cave session, you’ll receive the profoundly soothing experience of sound therapy built right into your chair. Deep and calming vibrations emanate from the Legato Lounger, while entrancing binaural beats play in stereo through the headphones.
For some, the addition of therapeutic sound adds a deeply meditative and transformative layer to the relaxation of the halotherapy experience.

Where did salt therapy originate?
In the mid 1800’s, Polish physicians noticed that salt miners rarely suffered from respiratory diseases. During World War II, many asthma and allergy sufferers who hid out in the salt mines during the war emerged breathing freely. From these observations, speleotherapy (salt cave therapy, “speleo” means cave) was founded. Today the healthcare systems in many countries pay for people to spend several weeks per year in the salt mines in order to prevent, and heal respiratory and skin conditions. Athletes throughout the world incorporate salt therapy sessions in their training regimens and it increases oxygenation and endurance.
Halotherapy rooms built to recreate the salt cave environment are now found throughout the world today. Special equipment called halogenerators grind and disperse salt aerosol into the air. You can read more about the history of halotherapy and its many benefits on our halotherapy page.
Can I book a session without the salt therapy (halotherapy)?
Yes. Just let us know when booking/upon arrival if you would prefer to not have the salt therapy (halotherapy) during your session. You will still receive the sound therapy in the Legato Loungers, Organic Tea, Warm Salt Stones. The prices of the sessions will still remain the same.
